'My mother-in-law ruined my top baby name with a disgusting nickname - I'm seething'

Naming a baby is no easy task.

Coming up with a baby name you love can sometimes feel impossible, so it's no wonder some parents feel huge relief when they finally stumble upon a moniker they believe fits their child. But what would you do if the name you picked for your child was completely ruined by a family member?

That's what happened to one woman who claimed her mother-in-law made her "hate" the top name she'd picked out for her daughter, simply by shortening it into a nickname she didn't like. To make matters worse, it wasn't the first time she had pulled a similar tactic.

In a post on Reddit, the mum said she wanted to name her upcoming second daughter Caroline. She loved the moniker until she heard her mother-in-law shorten it to "Carrie", at which point she was turned off completely.

While the nickname might not sound like a big deal, the woman said she had already been forced to change her first daughter's name because of her mother-in-law's horrid nicknames, as she kept calling the baby "Wheezy" instead of Louise.

She wrote: "Long story short, it has taken my husband and me forever to find a name we like for our second daughter (due in three weeks). It has just been so hard to decide this time around!

"We finally settled on Caroline. My mother-in-law suggested we call her Carrie for a nickname. And now I HATE the idea of it. She did something similar with our first child. We were going to name her Louise, she was calling her Wheezy for weeks before she was born. At the last minute, we changed her name to Laura with the middle name Louise instead.

"I love our first daughter's name now. We call her Laura Lou and Lou for a nickname (Wheezy has died thankfully). Hoping to find a similar name with no nicknames for this girl now. Or a nickname that is naturally cute."

The mum said she had been considering backup names including Claire, Wren, and Dorothy, but she wasn't enamoured with any of these choices in the same way she was with Caroline. But commenters urged her not to care what her mother-in-law says and to stick with Caroline.

One person said: "I wouldn't change it. Caroline is a beautiful name. I've met a few Carolines and never crossed my mind to shorten it to Carrie." Another added: "My name is Caroline. Nobody has ever shortened my name."

A third also posted: "I don't see what the issue is with other people giving your baby a nickname, your child develops their own relationships with other people and you may as well understand that from the moment the kid is born."
